The Palmetto
The Palmetto
The Palmetto was added to the South Carolina Flag in 1861, also a reference to Moultrie's defense of Sullivan's Island; the fortress he'd constructed had survived largely because the palmettos, laid over sand walls, were able to withstand the British cannon attack earning the Palmetto's place in our history.
We felt the Palmetto is a fitting name for this unique spray pattern as it shows off it's height, strength and wherewithal.

The Seabrook
Along the rivers of Seabrook, early planters built their rich domains, furnished lavishly with finery and fabrics from abroad. As a traveler drives to Seabrook Island through the tentacled fingers of the moss-draped oaks, he passes through a little-changed terrain of wildflowers, island shrubs, palmettos and stately pines. The observant may catch glimpses of the trees and walls of old homes remaining from the romantic era.

The Kiawah
The Kiawah
During the War of 1812, fortifications are built on the north end of Kiawah to maintain control of the Stono and Kiawah Rivers. Kiawah was named for the Kiawah Indians who were led by their head chieftain or cassique. In the year 1670, the cassique of the Kiawah led English colonists to settle at Charlestowne Landing.

The Crescent
The Crescent
If you want to know the true meaning behind South Carolinas' Cresent, you'll get different stories, depending on who you ask.
The first option you have is that it is a gorget, which was the crescent worn on the caps of the South Carolina revolutionary soldiers. This version is actually what most people believe.
The other choice seems to make a lot of sense too, though. In European history, the crescent was a symbol that represented towns founded on the banks of a river loop. Charleston, or Charlestowne, was the founding city of what became South Carolina, and was established on a "loop" of the Ashley River. So the image on the state flag could represent the founding city of Charlestowne.

The Edisto
The Edisto
The Edisto River is one of the longest free-flowing blackwater rivers in North America, flowing over 250 meandering miles from its sources within South Carolina.
It is the longest and largest river system completely contained by the borders of South Carolina. Its name comes from the Edisto subtribe of the Cusabo Indians.
Near the coast, part of the river was once known as the Ponpon River., its also at the confluence of the Wadmalaw and the Toogoodoo rivers, where they meet the Atlantic Ocean

The Hunley Spar
Just before 9 PM, February 17th 1864, the Housatonic was rammed with a Spar Torpedo attached to the bow of the Hunley Submarine.
The Housatonic became the First ship to ever be attacked and sunk by a submarine.
The crew of the Housatonic saw the Hunley Submarine in the water 100 yards off, approaching the ship "It had the appearance of a plank moving in the water"
Although the chain was slipped, the engine backed, and all hands were called to quarters, it was too late.
Within two minutes of the first sighting, the Confederate submarine H.L. Hunley rammed her Spar Torpedo into Housatonic's starboard side, forward of the mizzenmast, in history's first successful submarine attack on a warship.

The Wappoo
On March 21st, Hessian Capt. Johann Ewald conducted a reconnaissance of the Patriot lines and found the place where the main Patriot guard stationed himself. He also discovered the different paths of the guard posts, and then placed a corporal and five men on one of these paths. The men were to remain until they were able to ambush a returning Patriot guard.
About midnight, a party of Patriot dragoons rode up to the redoubts on the Wappoo Canal and fired their pistols. Upon their return the Hessians ambushed them. One sergeant major was wounded and captured.

The Bohicket
During the Civil War, Folly was occupied by Federal troops beginning in 1863. Despite the jungle-like foliage, the soldiers constructed roads, forts, an artillery battery, and a supply depot. Eventually, Folly Island had the capacity to hold up to 13,000 troops and their equipment. The Federal army used Folly Island as its main strategic base for the battle to take Fort Sumter.
